Healthcare Reform in Pennsylvania

Health Insurance companies lead the campaign to improve primary care and healthcare’s financial system. In Pennsylvania, health insurers have agreed to spend $13 million to finance the governor’s new program. The program begins with 150 doctors in the state of Pennsylvania with more the 200,000 patients. Aetna and Independence Blue Cross lead the program to create a new, more efficient healthcare system. The system will integrate Information Technology with software specifically designed to compliment the work of healthcare professionals. The software will help doctors track patients. The program is also specifically designed to alleviate the pains of the Emergency Room by allowing patients to reach their own doctors quickly. Patients will be able to make immediate appointments by phone and email. Healthcare will be provided quicker and pay will be based on the quality of care the patients receive. The healthier the patients remain, the more compensation the doctor will receive. The new system will focus on preventative care.

Some healthcare experts are skeptical that this plan will do little to help the level of care provided. In fact, some doctors feel that this program will force doctors to ‘cherry pick’ the healthiest patients. Some doctors may even begin a prescreening process which would turn ill patients away. Whatever the outcome, it’s a step in the right direction to reform our healthcare system into a more efficient process. A constant evolution of change will help identify the nest characteristics of our healthcare system.

"Health Insurance companies lead the campaign to improve" - I like the beginning Private sector is always better in finding new ways and putting pressure than government. But sometimes it's limited. Interesting situation about spreading private insurance and doctors is here in Canada - check out my article on disability insurance in Ontario site.
