South Carolina: Extend Access to More Individuals?

Senator Joel Lourie has proposed a bill to extend access to South Carolina Health Insurance to more of South Carolina’s young individuals. From a recent poll, it is estimated that 40% of South Carolina’s young adults (18 – 25 years old) have no health insurance. That translates to about 120,000 South Carolina citizens who take a risk of being exposed to serious medical costs everyday. These individuals may be young and in generally “good” health but they run a legitimate risk of suffering an injury from an accident or being diagnosed with a serious illness.

Most full-time college students are still covered by their parents plan but will lose coverage once they lose their ‘full-time’ student status. South Carolina has proposed to extend the age of the dependent child as other states have already done so. In New Jersey (a guaranteed issue state), coverage of a dependent child has been extended to the age of 30. With a grand total of about 700,000 uninsured residents in South Carolina, policy writers are searching for ways to offer more citizens access to health insurance. Most colleges have a generally high rate of insured students but beginning to ponder whether or not they should make health insurance mandatory for their students. The mandate, would increase a students cost of education but the benefits may outweigh the costs in the long run.
