California Healthcare Reform Update

Just over a month ago, the California Health Senate Committee voted against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s $14.9 billion healthcare reform . The plan received plenty of criticism, especially from Schwarzenegger’s fellow republicans. Although Arnold is serving the Republican Party, the reform takes on a left wing perspective by relying heavily on a tax increase.

Funding was to come from four major sources. Three sources would be generated from a tax increase. Hospitals would be taxed an additional $2.3 billion dollars, an additional tax on businesses of 1 to 6.5% of their payroll, and an additional tax of $1.50 to $2.00 per pack of cigarettes. The tax increase in would significantly hurt those in need of health insurance, as well as young workers and struggling businesses. The new tax would prohibit businesses from growing and avid smokers from the lower class would see an extreme rise in the cost of their cigarettes. The $2.3 billion tax on hospitals will only contribute to the rise in healthcare costs in the state of California! The funding for this program will only lead to more financial suffering from California’s citizens. Clearly, this plan was not well thought out and forced through in a speedy process.
