Colorado Promises Children Access to Healthcare

In Colorado, the Senate has approved a resolution to provide healthcare access to all of the state’s children by the year 2010. There are approximately 180,000 Colorado children who currently lack a form of health insurance. The rest of the state’s children already receive their health insurance coverage from private health insurance providers or a government run program. To insure or at least grant access to the remainder of the children, Senator Bill Cadman predicts that it could cost the state anywhere between $350 million and $1.5 billion. The hefty price tag for health insurance, presents the best and worst case scenarios on a per year basis.

Most politicians fear the state cannot cover the great cost of the health coverage without raising taxes. But raising taxes in the state is highly unlikely considering it would presumably be rejected. But the members of the state are adamant on granting some form of access to the healthcare system for the uninsured children. The Colorado health insurance market is experiencing rising healthcare cost just as the rest of the country is but many politicians are seeking ways to pay for these expenses rather than lower the costs.
