Emergency Room: No Emergency Necessary?
Today, in hospitals across the country, emergency rooms are filled with uninsured patients seeking medical attention for non-emergency issues. Uninsured patients are seeking routine medical care from emergency rooms which is creating a huge burden on hospitals to provide sufficient care to those with private health insurance. Even if you possess private health insurance from a respectable source, you will have to wait longer to in the event of an emergency. Waiting time for an examination in emergency rooms has been increasing for many years. In 2004, it is estimated that patients will wait about 30 minutes to see a physician. This is a radical increase compared to waiting times of the past. As our nation grows and the uninsured remain uninsured, the waiting time periods will continue to increase. One huge factor that contributes to the increase in waiting time is the lack of a primary care doctor of uninsured patients. Uninsured healthcare patients usually do not have a primary care doctor which limits them to the use of the hospitals for routine check-ups and non-emergency cases. Rather than adopt a universal healthcare system, giving access to all citizens, the healthcare system should adopt another alternative to give healthcare access to the uninsured without compromising the benefits of owning your own private insurance.
