The new SCHIP Proposal: DENIED.

Bush’s seventh veto in seven years came on Wednesday night as he vetoed the latest Democratic SCHIP proposal. Bush also vetoed the previous Democratic Party’s SCHIP proposal. Wednesday was Bush’s last chance to officially veto the bill before it became a law. After the previous veto of the SCHIP proposal, he stated what he believed was wrong and should be changed for the next proposal. The Democratic response to Bush’s veto neglected his opinion on how the proposal should be improved. They refused to exclude adults from the new bill and expanded the bill to families with higher income and increased taxes. The bill failed to put children first. Bush demanded that the less fortunate children receive healthcare and coverage before the children of a higher income. The proposal failed to meet this guide line. Bush also disagreed with the 61 cent tax increase on each pack of cigarettes.

Funding for the latest bill increased to $35 billion over a period of five years. The program would add about 4 million people to the program who cannot afford health insurance but earn too much money to apply for Medicaid. Nationwide, there are more the 6 million children under the age of 18 who lack health insurance. Those 6 million children are about 9% of the countries population of children who lack proper healthcare.
