Clinton’s Healthcare Reform? Or Nixon’s?!?

Since the Second World War, there have been five presidents who tried to reform America to a universal healthcare system. All have been unsuccessful so far. On February 6, 1974, President Nixon addressed the American People one last time to introduce his Comprehensive Health Insurance Act. Nixon’s proposal was extensive and designed to improve protection against catastrophic illnesses. To ensure access to all, Nixon’s plan would grant government subsidies to small businesses and the self-employed while building on existing employer-sponsored programs.

Does this plan sound familiar? Fast-forward to present day. Clinton, Obama, and Edwards have all outlined similar plans to reform the health insurance industry. Clinton’s plan builds on the current healthcare system and uses tax credits and government funding to offer health insurance to more Americans. Clinton (like Nixon) claims her plan will not be government-run. Today’s Democratic Party is focused on reforming healthcare because more than half of all American’s support a universal health insurance system. Each Democratic Presidential Candidate’s plan is slightly different but all aim to offer universal healthcare which will ultimately socialize medicine.
