College Grads Left Uninsured
College graduates are facing a tough time in between graduation and beginning a career. This period of time is very dangerous for young individuals who lack health insurance. Once a college students graduates, they can no longer be covered by their parents health insurance plan. Most students coming out of college do not have a job where they can afford both rent and college tuition, so rent takes a priority over healthcare. In Kansas, 20% of people between the ages of 19 and 25 do not have health insurance. The demographic of people without health insurance cannot afford healthcare because they still depend on their parents for support.
Many states are trying to allow children to stay on their family’s healthcare plan until the age of 25. But not everyone agrees with this theory. Some believe that children should take the responsibility into their own hands and “grow up.” Extending the age of coverage only delays the time that these children will begin to take care of themselves. But children are staying in school longer than the prior generations. They are taking more time to grow up but earning a greater education in the process.
