Edwards Health Care Plan
John Edward's plan promotes a universal health care system. He believes his plan will save each American family over $2000 each year in health insurance, and that it will save the country billions of dollars per year. In order to make his plan a reality, Edwards would require that all employers provide health insurance for their employees or at least help them with the costs of coverage. In order to make health insurance affordable, new tax credits will be created, Medicaid and SCHIP will be expanded, and insurance laws will be reformed. Also, Edwards will create regional "Health Care Markets" so that Americans will be able to bargain and have more choices available to them when they buy health insurance. Once Edwards has put his plans into effect, he will make health insurance mandatory for every American.
Edwards believes that it is necessary to set rules and standards for the industry, such as forcing health insurance companies to spend 85% of premiums on patients. Without rules such as this, insurance companies will still be able to sell health insurance at unaffordable rates. Edwards believes that Health Care Markets would help reduce the cost of health insurance by bringing private insurance companies into competition with the public plan. In addition, Edwards wants to offer cash prizes instead of patents to companies when they develop new drugs. This would prevent their monopoly on the drug and it would allow multiple companies to produce generic and other versions of the drugs at lower prices. Edwards wants to let the FDA approve biogenerics, which he believes would save $43 billion in the next ten years.
Edwards plans to cut the cost of and improve treatment for chronic diseases by creating "medical homes" and requiring health care markets and public plans to monitor the health of chronically ill patients. Edwards will also require health insurance companies to cover preventive care, and the public plans will offer preventive care without co-payments. Edwards believes that the only way to implement reforms is to raise taxes, but by doing so every American will have health insurance.

Great, just as Canada is waking up to what a disaster their system is, we try and copy it.

I think John Edwards has got it right. He's actually trying to do something.

John Edwards is a phony populist. He'll set up this second tier public health system and then use the health care in the other America for himself.
