Barack Obama's Plan for a Healthy America
Barack Obama wants to start a "new national health program that will allow individuals and small businesses to buy affordable health care similar to that available to federal employees." Under the Obama Plan, no one will be rejected or charged more for coverage due to illness. Anyone who is unable to pay for health insurance, but does not qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP will receive a subsidy for their health insurance premiums. Obama wants to create a National Health Insurance Exchange which will help individuals buy health insurance by establishing standards and rules for insurance companies. Insurance companies will be required to provide each applicant with health insurance at a fair price. In addition, insurance companies and hospitals will be required to make public reports on the quality and cost of health care. To ensure that all Americans have and maintain affordable health insurance, employers must contribute part of the payroll toward the costs of the national plan if they do not help their own employees with health insurance costs. Also, under the Obama Plan, participants will be able to change jobs without the fear of losing their health insurance.
Obama believes that his plan will save a typical American family $2500 a year, and he plans to fund his health care reform through increased taxes on the wealthy. In order to make health insurance more affordable, Obama plans to increase competition in the insurance and drug markets. Obama believes billions could be saved by allowing the government to negotiate with drug companies for lower prescription drug costs. He will also force drug companies to allow generic drugs to enter the market.
In addition to health care reform, Obama's plan for a healthy America includes a fight against AIDS, the protection of children against lead poisoning, improvements in mental health care, reduction of mercury pollution, help for autistic Americans, and much more. Barack Obama has promised that if he is elected president, he will put this universal health care system into effect by the end of his first term.

Universal health care would be great, but where does Obama plan to get all of this money? An increase in taxes could not support all of these reforms.

A Universal plan can be very limiting as seen in other countries where it may take up to 3-4 weeks to get an appointment or schedule a surgery. The government should create a plan that offers a tax credit or gives vouchers for people to put toward the premium and allows folks to but whatever individual/family plan they want - if not covered through an employer plan.
